The Minimalist Makeup Look for Beginners

What is the minimalist makeup look? In my opinion, this is the less is more look. This is taking your natural features and enhancing them with makeup, without looking like you have a ton of makeup on. It’s creating an easy and quick everyday look, using the least amount of product for the maximum effect.

I’ll be showing you my favorite products to use to create your own minimalist makeup look that’s perfect for beginners.

The Minimalist Makeup Look for Beginners

1. Skin Prep

If you want to get the most out of your makeup, your skin must be well prepped. A good skincare routine is essential to your makeup looking its best. I suggest focusing on exfoliating and hydrating. Makeup always applies best on smooth, hydrated skin.

Start your makeup routine with a lightweight moisturizer like the one below from Versed. This moisturizer will hydrate, brighten, even skin tone and minimize the look of pores.

2. Glow Drops

After using a moisturizer, add glow drops to prime your skin and give it that illuminated from within look. The one I use daily is linked below.

3. Tinted Hydrator & Concealer

Since you’re going for a minimalist makeup look, the last thing you want is a heavy foundation. A tinted hydrator will give just enough coverage, and even out your skin, too. If using all three of these (daily moisturizer, glow drops and tinted hydrator) feel like too much, or if you have more oily skin, you can try omitting the daily moisturizer.

Concealer is completely optional. Because again you’re going for a minimalist makeup look for beginners, it’s definitely a step you can skip. However, because you’re not using a heavy foundation, it’s completely okay if you want a little extra coverage. If you are going to use concealer just be sure to use a more hydrating option. The new Shape Tape Radiant Concealer is an exceptional choice for the no makeup look. It’s the perfect amount of light and bright without being heavy or cakey.

4. Bronzer and Blush

Now that you have your base, you can focus on sculpting and highlighting. A cream or liquid bronzer and blush will be your go to for a minimalist makeup look. You’ll want to apply your bronzer with an angled brush just underneath your cheekbones to create dimension. You can also add your bronzer to your outer forehead area and jawline. Make sure to blend well and in an upward motion.

Use your fingers to tap the cream blush on the apples of your cheekbones in an upward motion.

5. Highlighter

One of the easiest ways to get the minimalist makeup look for beginners is with a liquid or cream highlighter. Again, Tarte Cosmetics has a great diamond-infused liquid highlighter that gives a natural, radiant glow. This particular one comes in a tube, complete with a sponge tip applicator. You can apply highlighter to the areas of your face where the sunlight would naturally hit, and blend with your fingertips or brush.

6. Powder

In order to keep your makeup in place all day, you’ll want to set it with a setting powder. Again, this is a minimalist makeup look so you’ll want to choose a very lightweight powder and use a small amount. I like to stick to my under eye and t-zone areas.

7. Brow Gel

Brows have definitely gone through their trends over the years. We’ve seen thick, thin, bushy, fluffy, and now we’re even seeing bleached brows. Thankfully, the minimalist brow is natural and of minimal effort, which is perfect for beginners. For these brows we’re simply going to brush them and add some brow gel.

8. Mascara

Long, luscious lashes are a must when it comes to the minimalist makeup look. Tubing mascara has been a game changer for me. Instead of coating your lashes like a traditional mascara, it wraps the product around your lashes creating an extension effect. It’s also smudge-proof, which is a huge bonus.

9. Lip Balm

Giving your lips some love is a must. A moisturizing, tinted lip balm is my favorite kind of lip for a natural looking pout.

10. Setting Spray

The last step in your minimalist makeup look is setting spray. A good setting spray is key making your makeup glow all day long. The one below is raved about within the makeup community.
