Home Office Makeover

IMG_0143.JPG

I’ve always had a home office, but truth be told, I never really utilized it.  It’s upstairs and kind of tucked away and I always preferred sitting on my couch, looking out my front window while typing away on my laptop.  That was until Covid hit and the kids all started distance learning!!!  The downstairs area quickly became a workstation for the entire household, including Paul because he was now home, too.  I tried continuing my routine for quite a while, but it just wasn’t working.  The kids knew I was right there to answer any questions they might have, and/or feed them ALL THE SNACKS because for some reason they’re much hungrier when they’re learning at home!  Paul’s usual list of daily to do items for me went completely out the window.  If I was right there in the same room, I could definitely do anything he needed right at that moment!  Who needs a list when you can just rapid-fire tasks at someone instead?!

I knew I needed to utilize the office I already had, but sometimes it takes awhile for me to wrap my head around new ideas.  I’m kind of stubborn that way!  I need things to be my decision and on my terms.  Gosh that sounds terrible, but sadly it’s true!  I could write an entire blog post around my control issues! Lol.

Anyhoo, once I realized what a fun little project making over my office could be, it was game on!  I knew I wanted it to be three things: cozy, functional, and chic.  It honestly didn’t take much to get it where it needed to be.  Just a few extra touches and it could be my dream hideout….I mean workspace!

First things first.  If I wanted cozy, I would need a couch.  My favorite part of working downstairs in our living room was spending my mornings on the couch with a cup of coffee.  The only problem is I would need a really small couch because the office is not very big.  I think it’s around 8’ by 12’.

Once I saw this couch, I knew it was perfect!  It was nice and small, and just big enough for me to lounge on while working.  It came in three color options and the gold legs were so chic!  Choosing which color to go with was tough.  The cream color gave me all the neutral feels, the mauve really pulled at my girly side, and the gray seemed like the perfect compromise between the two.  Eventually, my girly side won, and I went with the mauve.  Plus, I’m sure it wouldn’t have taken long for the cream one to end up covered in coffee!

I already had a desk that I loved, so no need for a new one.  But I did need some new desk accessories.  I love mixing metals, but for my office I really wanted to focus on gold.  I found some great gold storage pieces for my desk, as well as THE BEST gold garbage can.  And I even swapped the original nickel pulls on my filing cabinets for some super fun gold ones.

I also wanted a mirror for my office.  I thought about a floor length mirror, but with space being so limited I decided a smaller mirror for the wall would be less overwhelming.  After looking at tons of mirrors, and even contemplating the Anthro mirror, I decided to go with this Kelly Clarkson Home mirror.  I’m so glad that I did because I’m so in love with it.  Unfortunately, it’s backordered until October, but I can link some similar ones here.

I had some zebra print accent chairs that I got a few years back from a neighbor, that I knew would be the perfect addition to this space.  After that, it was really just about a few wall hangings and some accent pieces to place around the room.  I printed a few of my favorite photos of the girls and I to hang on the wall, and the rest were just some inspirational pictures I found at Marshalls.

There is one last thing that I’m planning on getting for the office before I call it “finished”.  I want to get a custom mirror sign, like the one here.

Stay tuned…

As I sit here on my couch, typing this in my beautiful office, I can’t help but feel all the feels.  It feels so good to have a workspace that’s my own, that I created.  Every touch and detail is COMPLETELY ME.  My hope is that this post helps give you some motivation to create a workspace that’s all your own, too!
